I Recommend This Course Bethpage Black, ranked 37th on Golf Digest's ranking of America's 100 Greatest courses, will be hosting its third major and its first PGA Championship in May 2019 Tillinghast, the Black golf course opened in 1936. This time the fairways were chewed up a bit, lots of unfilled divots and some drainage issues. That's because they are owned by the public. It's one of the best designed courses I've ever played. If your budget allows, take a caddy for sure and listen to their advice.Played here 10 years ago. There are restrictions, however, for the Black course: There was a bit of construction on 18, they're adding new bunkers, as if they need more of those.Minor critiques. UNLIMITED rounds of golf over three days, and two nights lodging in one of our 4-bedroom Stay & Play luxury townhomes, including access to fine dining for dinner at Champs and Rockers. Pace of play is always an issue, we played in about 5:15, that's reasonably fast for the Black. A total of 79 of its 120 entrants made the second-round cut at 145 (+3). Extremely difficult. You must be able to find the fairway to score well here. Narrow fairways, long and very lush rough in addition to elevation changes, tough bunkering and firm fast greens make for a challenging yet fair test of golf. The Bethpage Black Course is a public golf course at Bethpage State Park on Long Island, New York.Opened in 1936, it was designed by Bethpage State Park superintendent Joseph H. Burbeck, who was also responsible for the park's Blue and Red Courses in the mid-1930s. Tillinghast, the Black golf course opened in 1936. I Recommend This Course There are actually 5 courses in this state park ... all are great, but the black course is a step above the rest.
It’s ridiculous to try and book a tee time through the reservation system, unless you want to play late afternoon. So when I actually became a NY resident and got access to the tee time system life has never been the same! It's hosted the US Open twice in the last decade yet still only costs New York State residents $75 to play on weekends. Great design. The sign is a tourist attraction now. It’s long, so long, and unforgiving — the rough is brutal and even the first cut isn’t gentle. Trouble is at every corner so bring your A game. I Recommend This Course miles from center of Make it happen.Really incredible public golf course. The greens are mostly flat and fair and in good shape, not great, which is understandable given the amount of play.But I can’t wait to go back. Except maybe the lack of a proper driving range.It should be on every golfers top five bucket list courses and it’s public, and relatively speaking, cheap to play so there is no reason not to make the trip out to Long Island. The greens were in great shape and fast, the rough was super thick and the fairways were in great shape. Stay out of the rough. The layout is spectacular, the bunkering is breathtaking, and the greens are fair. The strength of this course is in the routing and flow of the design. The course is for walkers only and its slope rating is one of the highest in the northeast. Cannot be played enough times. There are 75 sand bunkers on the course but only one water hazard. WOW!!!!! Played it today in near 100 degree heat so that wasn’t pleasant. A real thrill to play the same course that hosts the US Open. Holes 4, 5, and 12 are the best on the course.

I usually carry but do recommend using a push cart as its a very tough walk, especially in the summer.I play the black course a few times a year and some mixed opinions. Fla. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars was because of the conditions. I Recommend This Course I would love to play this course again but perhaps just once or twice a year.Mythical Bethpage Black reputation is fully warranted. But if you're looking for a challenge, you'll be hard pressed to find a better course. The course was absolutely amazing and couldn’t have asked for better weather.
