Big Brothers Big Sisters is predicated on extremely detailed and rigorous volunteer/youth screening, training, and matching practices and standards. If you are in a committed relationship, you can be a Big Couple. Our matching process is not a “next in line” process. Be a Big. We ask for a commitment of at least one year. In the community-based program Bigs take their Littles out to do activities they both enjoy--going to the park, playing sports, visiting the library, getting a bite to eat --simple activities that end up making a big difference.

To help you make your decision about mentoring with Big Brothers Big Sisters, you can evaluate yourself against the following characteristics of successful mentors: I am over 18 years of age. Requirements to Become a Big Brother/Big Sister. The main focus is the friendship you develop with your Little and the impact you have on their life.The quality of time invested with your Little is more important than the amount of money you spend. Be a Big. A Big Couple mentors one child together as a team in a community based match. In the Community Based Program, you’ll meet with your Little two to four times a month for a few hours at a time. The specific training requirements vary from site to site but typically involve discussions on program rules, match expectations, relationship building, match activities, and communication skills.
