Decades of a love triangle concerning two friends and an impulsive woman. Star Anna Karina was in the brutal early rounds of marriage to her director, who was never more doting and egghead-condescending than in this showpiece.

Godard adopts a documentary approach (with facts and figures about the prostitution business recited by Godard on the soundtrack), and at times it's easy to forget that we're watching actors reciting lines. "My Life to Live" has just as much social currency today as the day it was released if its gangster trope ending lets Godard off the hook all too easy.

The movie is comprised of a series of 12 "tableaux"-- scenes which are basically unconnected episodes, each presented with a worded introduction. (STD's, being beaten up, being degraded, etc?).

When her reluctant boyfriend suggests that his best friend impregnate her, feelings become complicated when she accepts.

Is it over-compensating for not showing some of the more painful aspects of prostitution along the way?

Godard mixes titles, unusual use of sound, and long scenes of dialog.



He had so far turned out a gangster-movie knockoff (Breathless), a dark political picture (Le Petit soldat), and a sort-of-musical comedy (Une femme est une femme). The ending is also ridiculously abrupt; it is a grand statement but to me borders on pretentiousness.

| This film explores a Parisian woman's descent into prostitution. Godard was making a point about the realities of life, and employing new filmmaking techniques while telling the story.

To his credit, Godard is unflinching in his honesty, and there is no sentimentality here. Vous donnez un sens à votre vie jour après jour avec vos propres actions et pensées.

But there is a new DVD of "My Life to Live" ("Vivre Sa Vie"), from 1963.



Until then, with the exception of the attempted kiss scene, the 'insight' we get is mostly just a beautiful model being bored by her tricks. A French striptease artist is desperate to become a mother.

He is brilliantly served by his wife, Anna Karina, in this film.
