The Roosevelt renovation was planned and carried out by the famous New York architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. President Washington, together with city planner Pierre L'Enfant, chose the site for the new residence, which is not 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Washington, D.C., is one of the only cities in the world that was designed before it was built. He proposed that each of the colonies be run as independent states, a matter that was seconded and approved on May 15, 1776.
